The Altorfer deck chair , Embru model 558 is a 1948 by Huldreich Altorfer jr. (1911–1980) designed deck chair . Today it is one of the design classics and is still produced in Switzerland in a slightly different form . It is probably the forefather of all later “ spaghetti chairs ” of the 1970s and 1980s.

history

The Altorfer deck chair was designed in 1948 by the Swiss Huldreich Altorfer Jr., son of the then director of the Embru factory in Rüti (ZH) . The chair was produced under the model name Altorfer Liegestuhl Modell 1158 from 1949 to 1970 at Altorfer AG, Wald ZH, founded by Huldreich Altorfer, and from 1970 after the takeover of Altorfer AG, in a slightly different form, at Embru.

In 1964 he was awarded the "Good Form" by Max Bill . It is one of the design classics and is still manufactured and sold under the model name Embru-Modell 558 . Initially it was only intended for use in the garden, today it is also often used in the contract sector. The lounger was soon joined by a matching chair and armchair, popularly known as the "spaghetti chair". This has been reinterpreted countless times by other designers and manufacturers.

design

The Embru model 558 is characterized by its timeless shape and extreme durability. It consists of a hot-dip galvanized tubular frame and is then stretched by hand with 160 meters of colored plastic cord ( PVC ), which gives it its unmistakable appearance and which is the reason for the nickname spaghetti chair . The Altorfer deck chair is collapsible and weatherproof.
