Arlindo Marçal

Arlindo Francisco Marçal (born May 31, 1960 in Same , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese politician, diplomat and Protestant priest.

Career

Marçal studied theology in Kupang and Yogyakarta / Indonesia . In 1992 he became a moderator leader of the Protestant Christian Church of East Timor ( Indonesian Gerja Kristen Timor Timur GKTT). Under him, the GKTT distanced themselves from the Indonesian occupiers. The GKTT became a member of the World Reformed Federation and Marçal positioned himself as a supporter of East Timor’s independence, who sought support from Christians abroad. He was a guest at two general assemblies of the Presbyterian Churches in the USA . Marçal played a decisive role in founding the NGO Yayasan HAK in 1996.

In 1999, Marçal co-founded the Partido Democrata Cristão (PDC), of which he became its general secretary and which he represented in the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense (CNRT). He gave up his post as moderator of the GKTT in 2002. At times the PDC merged with the União Democrata-Crista de Timor (UDC) and Marçal became chairman of the UDC / PDC together with Vicente da Silva Guterres . But already in 2000 the PDC split off as a new foundation and the UDC / PDC formed its own party until it finally merged into the PDC. Marçal was replaced as General Secretary by Júlio Pereira.

Marçal took second place on the PDC's electoral list in the 2001 Constituent Assembly elections . In the Constituent Assembly , Marçal was Deputy President from 2001 to 2002, but left parliament early because he was appointed East Timor's first ambassador to Indonesia on May 20, 2002 after East Timor's independence . He held the office from 2003 to 2007. Here he was replaced by Ovídio Amaral .

Marçal later worked as a lawyer in Dili and founded the NGO Hametin. From 2019 to 2022 he was a member of the supervisory board of the Centro Nasional Chega (CNC). appointed.
