Catholic and Protestant leaders founded the PDC in Dili in 1999. The party was a member of the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense CNRT , the umbrella organization of the parties and groups that advocated the independence of East Timor from Indonesia . From August 2000 she appeared with the União Democrata-Crista de Timor (UDC) on a joint tour. These were Vicente da Silva Guterres (UDC) and Arlindo Marçal , the former chairman of the Protestant Christian Churches of East Timor . The UDC was a member of the National Council, the PDC was not. The PDC was in contact with the Indonesian democracy movement. The PDC was seen as standing further to the left of the UDC, with proximity to FRETILIN . Both parties were based on Christian social values. On August 5, 2000, the Catholic António Ximenes da Costa re-founded the PDC as a spin-off from the UDC / PDC.

On August 5, 2003, Olinda Guterres was elected as the new party leader by a party congress, but this was not recognized by the previous party leader António Ximenes da Costa and his supporters. The Supreme Court of the country ruled in 2005 in favor of the PDC of António Ximenes da Costa. The PDC of Guterres was considered illegal because it was not officially registered by the court and also did not have the necessary 1500 supporters.

Finally, UDC / PDC and PDC merged again under the banner of the PDC before the parliamentary elections on June 30, 2007 . One reason for this was that the PDC headquarters was burned down during the 2006 riots in East Timor . The PDC actively supports refugees returning to their homeland from the Indonesian part of West Timor .

In July 2007 the PDC joined forces with five other parties, which had also failed in the parliamentary elections by the three percent hurdle, to form the Liga Democrática Progressiva LDP . The LDP was supposed to serve as a political platform outside of parliament for the parties, which are ideologically and in their program very different .

After the 2017 elections , the PDC joined the Fórum Demokrátiku Nasionál (FDN), but separated from the alliance in 2018 before the early elections on May 12th to become part of the Movimento Social Democrata (MSD). In the early parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2018 , the MSD clearly failed because of the four percent threshold with only 3,188 votes (share: 0.5%).

Performing in elections

In the parliamentary elections on August 30, 2001 , the PDC received 1.98% of the vote and two seats out of 88 in parliament. Their MPs were António Ximenes and Lúcio Marçal Gomes . The UDC / PDC won 0.66% and a seat in parliament. Their MP was Vicente da Silva Guterres, who moved to the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense CNRT for the 2007 election .

In the parliamentary elections on June 30, 2007, the PDC received 1.03% (4,300) of the valid votes and failed to pass the three percent hurdle. In no district did the party receive more than 1.7%. It received the most support in the Bobonaro district , where it received 497 votes (1.3%).

Also in 2012 the PDC failed to pass the three percent hurdle with 0.19% (887 votes). In the Ermera district it received the most votes with 155 (0.33%).

In the 2017 parliamentary elections , the PDC received 0.31% and failed to pass the four percent hurdle.
