Ragusa Ibla is a district of the city of Ragusa in the Italian region of Sicily . It is located in the east of the city below Ragusa Superiore .

Originally the settlement Hybla , founded by the Sikelern , was located here , from which the name Ragusa Ibla is derived. After a severe earthquake in 1693, the district was rebuilt in the Sicilian Baroque style. Ragusa Ibla is part of the World Heritage Late Baroque Cities of Val di Noto .

Buildings

At the beginning of a long flight of steps leading from Ragusa Ibla to Ragusa Superiore, is the baroque church Anime del Purgatorio .

The Church of San Giorgio is dedicated to St. George , the patron saint of Ragusa Ibla. It was built from 1744 to 1775 according to the plans of Rosario Gagliardi . A wide flight of stairs leads to the portal, which is framed by three columns. The order of the columns continues upwards to the bell floor, which is decorated with sculptures. The dome was not erected until 1820.

The church of San Giuseppe was also planned by Rosario Gagliardi and has an elliptical floor plan. The rich furnishings of the interior include a silver statue of St. Joseph, which dates from the 16th century.

North of the city park Giardino Ibleo are the archaeological sites of the ancient city, which was called Hybla Heraia under Greek rule .

Events

The New York Ibla Foundation regularly organizes international music competitions for various instrumental groups in Ragusa Ibla.
