The Centro Nacional Chega! CNC is the successor to the Reception, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of East Timor CAVR and the Truth and Friendship Commission CTF . The CNC was founded in 2017 on the basis of Law 48/2016. It administers the documents of the two commissions. The CNC is located in the former Comarca prison .

East Timor was in preparation for independence from 1974 and was occupied by neighboring Indonesia until 1999. As a research and education center, the CNC is intended to preserve the memory of the events in East Timor between 1974 and 1999 and thereby contribute to peace. In addition, the recommendations of the CAVR and the CTF, which deal with the processing of history and human rights violations during this time, are to be implemented through national and international cooperation. The center took the name “Enough!” ( Portuguese Chega! ) From the CAVR's final report of the same name.

The CNC works with both the government and non-governmental organizations.

Legal background

The CNC is an institute under public law, administratively and financially autonomous and subordinate to the Prime Minister of East Timor . It issues the guidelines for the implementation of the tasks, appoints and dismisses the members of the administrative board, the international advisory board and the director and approves the internal rules and regulations. The Prime Minister also oversees the CNC's activities, approves strategic plans, the annual plan and budget, as well as cooperation or technical assistance agreements.

The Board of Directors and the International Advisory Council report to the Prime Minister. The director of the CNC is subordinate to the board of directors. The first was Hugo Maria Fernandes held this post.

The Board of Directors for the 2017 to 2020 term of office includes Inês Maria de Almeida (President until January 2020), Arlindo Marçal (Acting President), Jovito Araújo , Alzira FS dos Reis and Francisco Dionisio Fernandes .
