Hugo Maria Fernandes

Hugo Maria Fernandes (born December 21, 1971 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese journalist .

Career

Fernandes studied forestry at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and international journalism at Cardiff University in Wales . In 1999 he was a founding member of the Associação de Jornalistas de Timor-Leste (AJTL).

From 2002 to 2005 he headed the Truth-Finding Department and “Co-Managing Editor” of Chega! , the final report of the Reception, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of East Timor (CAVR). In addition, from 2005 to 2008 he worked as coordinator of the research team and co- editor of the final report of the Truth and Friendship Commission (CTF). From 2008 to 2017 Fernandes worked for the Asia Foundation in East Timor as “Director of Policy and Institutional Strengthening” and “Team Leader for Support for Good Public Policy Program”. In 2014 he was one of the founders of the Southeast Asian Journalists Union (SEAJU) and was its deputy chairman from 2014 to 2017.

Fernandes has been the journalists' representative in the East Timorese press council since 2016 . Since 2017 he has been director of the Centro Nacional Chega! .
