Inês Maria de Almeida (born January 21, 1963 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese independence activist and diplomat.

When the civil war broke out in East Timor in August 1975 , Almeida and her family fled to Australia . From 1979 she worked as an activist for the independence of East Timor from Indonesia and at cultural events in the Timor-Leste's Cultural Center (CCTL). In 1989 she was Vice-Coordinator of the FRETILIN Committee Sydney (KFS). In 1992 Almeida and other Timorese people founded the East Timor Relief Association (ETRA), a non-governmental organization based in Sydney, which provided information about the East Timorese liberation struggle on the radio, in print, and through contacts with military groups in order to obtain logistical and financial support for the armed struggle . She also took part in all intra-Timorese dialogues in Austria (1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998), as well as in the Timorese National Convention in Peniche , Portugal in 1998, as a member of the CNRM . Almeida was also a participant in international conferences on the East Timor conflict, for example in Nairobi (1985), Vanuatu (1987), New Zealand (1990), Manila (1994), Japan (1994), South Korea (1995), Beijing (1995) and Canada (1997) ).

After East Timor regained independence, Almeida worked as a consultant for two ministries. In the Centro Nasional Chega (CNC) founded in 2016, Almeida was chairwoman of the supervisory board until January 2020. In mid-2019 she was proposed by the government as the new East Timorese ambassador to Australia , but the official appointment did not take place until January 28, 2020. On February 19, 2020, Almeida in Canberra handed over its accreditation to David Hurley .

Awards

Almeida received the Order of Vanuatu in 2009 for their commitment to "liberate their people".
