The Alzahra University ( Persian دانشگاه الزهرا) was founded in 1964 as a private "college for girls" in Tehran in the Vanak district . From April 19, 1975, it was under the patronage of Schahbanu Farah Pahlavi and until 1980 was officially called Farah Pahlavi University ( Daneschgah-e Farah Pahlavi ). It is the only university in Iran that only accepts women.

After the Islamic Revolution , the private university became a state university. It was named "Mahbubeh Motahedin University" after a member of the guerrilla organization People's Mujahedin . In August 1983 it was renamed Alzahra University after the daughter Zahra of the Prophet Mohammed .

Today the university offers 67 courses including six doctoral courses. Zahra Rahnaward , the wife of Mir Hossein Mousavi , was Rector of Alzahra University from 1998 to 2006. The college has been headed by Mahbubeh Mobascheri since 2007.
