The Am Sande square is located in the city center of Lüneburg . It is surrounded by mostly medieval town houses with their Gothic staircases and curved Baroque snail gables .

location

The Am Sande square is about 225 meters long and between 30 and 40 meters wide, it extends in a west-east direction. There is a slight gradient to St. Johanniskirche in the east of the square. At the eastern end of the square, a street called Am Sande turns north. At the next intersection with Papenstrasse and Glockenstrasse , the street turns into the street Am Berge . The following streets continue from Am Sande: At the Johanniskirche, Rote Straße, Heiligengeiststraße , Grapengießerstraße and Kleine Bäckerstraße. The numbering starts on the western side with the number 1, it is the Chamber of Commerce and Industry . It then continues counter-clockwise, through the northern detour to Kleine Bäckerstrasse. The following three houses already belong to Grapengießerstraße.

history

The square was first mentioned in 1229 as "in harena". The square was not originally fortified, hence the name Am Sande . The square was created as a connection between the Modestorpe settlement, the Kalkberg settlement and the saltworks. The trade route to Magdeburg and Braunschweig as well as Hamburg and Lübeck also ran here. Through the trade routes, the square became a trading center. A fee schedule is known from 1500, from which the importance of the square can be read. The salt trade took place in the house at Am Sande 45, it was a white shop. It is also documented that beer was traded on Am Sande from 1421 and grain from 1570. The fish trade and the trade in timber are also recorded in documents.

The development

The most conspicuous building is the former brewery, Haus Schütting, at the western end of the square. The building made of black and white glazed bricks, completed in 1548, stands on the narrow western side and today houses the Chamber of Commerce and Industry . On the eastern narrow side, the 108 meter high tower of the St. Johanniskirche dominates the view of the eastern square. The church does not belong to the square by post.

The ground floors of the Am Sande building have been heavily modified since the 19th century with the addition of shops, restaurants and other businesses. The gables have largely been preserved. They offer an overview of the Lüneburg architecture. The oldest gables date from the 14th and 15th centuries, the gables of the houses Am Sande 50 and 53. The houses Am Sande 5, 17 and 48 were only built after the Second World War and are not listed.
