Amage (Sarmatia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amage was a Sarmatian queen who - as Polyaenus reports - ruled as regent for her incompetent husband Medosak in the 4th century BC. She was radical and bellicose. For example, she once wrote a warning letter to a Scythian prince who repeatedly raided the areas in the Crimea that she had claimed . When he ignored this warning, she attacked Scythia with 120 horsemen, had his guards, friends and family slain and killed him himself in a sword fight. In later years she left the rule to one of her sons on the condition that he obey her orders.
