Adolf Ritter von Liebenberg de Zsittin (born September 5, 1851 in Como , Lombardy , † May 6, 1922 in Vienna ) was an Austrian crop scientist . He has taught at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna since 1878 .

Live and act

Adolf Liebenberg, son of an officer, studied chemistry and agriculture at the Technical University in Vienna from 1868 , continued his agricultural studies at the University of Halle (Saale) in 1871 and received his doctorate there in 1873 with Julius Kühn with a dissertation on the behavior of water in the soil . He then worked as an officer in a sugar factory. In 1875 he returned to the University of Halle and completed his habilitation in the same year with the paper " Investigations on soil heat ".

In 1876 Liebenberg accepted a call to the University of Königsberg . Here he worked as an associate professor for agriculture and continued to deal with questions of soil physics . As the successor to Friedrich Haberlandt , Liebenberg was appointed associate professor for agricultural crop production at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna in 1878 and was appointed full professor in 1884. As head of the chair for agricultural crop production, he worked here for 44 years as a successful teacher, researcher and organizer.

In Vienna, Liebenberg's research focus was initially on the field of seeds . In 1881 he founded a semen control station. He published several articles on open questions about germination physiology . He made particular contributions to the development of agricultural experiments. In 1885 he and Emanuel von Proskowetz founded the "Association for the Promotion of Agricultural Experiments in Austria", which he directed until 1899. In the "Mittheilungen" of this association (1886–1897) he published numerous articles on fertilization and variety experiments. He maintained close contacts with agricultural practice. After years of tough negotiations, in 1902 he was able to set up a university's own experimental farm in Groß-Enzersdorf .

Liebenberg sustainably promoted the specialization of agricultural teaching. In 1898 he succeeded in setting up a chair for phytopathology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and in 1906 a chair for plant breeding . Liebenberg's services were honored in 1898 with the award of the title of Hofrat (1898) and the Commander's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order (1900).
