Amalthea group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amalthea group form four small moons of Jupiter within the orbit of Io : Metis , Adrastea , Amalthea, and Thebe . This group is called the Amalthea Group because Amalthea is the largest among them. They are all quite small and potato-shaped. Since they have only a low force of gravity, it is assumed that meteorites can knock parts out of their crust, the material of which then forms the gossamer ring .
