The Amar Quartet was a string quartet based in Frankfurt am Main . It existed from 1921 to 1929. The first violin was played by the Hungarian violinist Licco Amar , the second violin by Walter Caspar . The quartet's violist was Paul Hindemith , Rudolf Hindemith played the cello in 1921/1922 and Maurits Frank from 1922 to 1929 .

The Amar Quartet initially only got together to interpret Paul Hindemith's Second String Quartet. It quickly became one of the most important quartets of the interwar period. It has made an outstanding contribution to contemporary music and has often appeared at the Donaueschinger Musiktage . It has premiered numerous works of new music.

Until its dissolution, the quartet was often represented in drawings in newspapers and magazines of the Weimar Republic by Paul Hindemith's friend and best man, the painter Rudolf Heinisch .

On the occasion of Paul Hindemith's 100th birthday, the Frankfurt Hindemith Institute transferred the name of the ensemble to the Amar Quartet (Zurich) in 1995 .
