Amaurote is a shoot'em-up computer game developed by John and Steve Pickford and published by Mastertronic in 1987 for various home computers across Europe. The music for the game is by David Whittaker.

Game action

After the city of Amaurote, borrowed from the novel “ Utopia ” by Thomas More , was plagued by an ominous insect plague, the player - as the last remaining officer of the Royal Army of Amaurote - is responsible for averting the threat. The armored spider-like vehicle “Arachnus 4”, which can be controlled with a joystick, for example, is available to him, along with communications technology, enemy radar and weapons arsenal. In addition, limited funds (so-called "dosh") enable the player to, for example, repair the fighting technique or teleport out of dangerous situations.

The total of 25 districts to be cleaned as non-destructively as possible are displayed in most home computer versions in graphically high-resolution isometric perspective and can be individually selected and entered on an overview map. Each district in turn is made up of individual sectors, whereby the transition between these is not made by soft shifting ( scrolling ), but by fading in and out. Directional arrows of a radar scanner lead to the movable insects to be combated with individual bombs. A bomb can only be fired upon when the field of play is clear of other bombs, i. H. Any bombs previously fired have exploded either on the opponent or on other objects in the playing area or have left the playing field. During the entire game, counters monitor the percentage of damage to the arachnus vehicle caused by the insects and the degree of destruction caused by the player in the respective district. If both do not reach 99 percent, the player can face the boss of the corresponding district. To shoot and destroy this immobile queen insect, a special weapon called the “Supa-Bomb” must first be requested by radio and then used.
