Amboy Dukes (gang)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Amboy Dukes is the name of a fictitious street gang in New York City in the district of Brownsville in Brooklyn late 19th century / early 20th century. The name is an invention of the American writer Irving Shulman , whose novel of the same name focuses on the fictional gang and its members. Although the author based his novel on various real street gangs from Brooklyn, there are no sources from the time that would prove the existence of the Amboy Dukes.

Due to the waves of immigration from Europe, the population in New York had grown considerably, but the American dream of social advancement was barred for many immigrants or seemed too difficult. Young, often ethnically recruited, gangs formed who derived their names from geographical features or street names. The "dukes" (English. Dukes) had accordingly named themselves after Amboy Street in Brownsville .

Culture

The Detroit rock group The Amboy Dukes deliberately derived their band name from the fictional street gang.
