The Amboy Dukes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Amboy Dukes were an American rock band from Detroit , Michigan that enjoyed some success in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her biggest hit was Journey to the Center of the Mind (1968).

Band history

The name of the band was borrowed from the fictional street gang (see Amboy Dukes (gang) ), which was named after a street in Brooklyn , New York , in the novel of the same name by Irving Shulman . The original core of the band consisted of John Drake ( vocals ), Steve Farmer ( rhythm guitar ) and Ted Nugent ( lead guitar ); the rest of the cast changed often. In 1969 Rusty Day became the new singer.

The debut album was released in 1967 on Bob Shadow's label "Mainstream"; the album Journey to the Center of the Mind (1968) was the band's most successful. The single of the same name reached number 16 on the US charts . The album and single were typical examples of acid rock ; the album cover showed 50 different devices for smoking marijuana .

The following long players could not repeat the success. After a few albums under the name "Ted Nugent & the Amboy Dukes", the group finally broke up in the mid-1970s and Ted Nugent began a solo career.
