Ant control

The control of ants is necessary if they endanger the safety of facilities, are perceived as disruptive or pose a hygienic problem. Some ants are also pests of plants. Various strategies are pursued, which are also combined:

  • Drowning : More or less nutritious liquids (beer, liqueur, etc.) are offered in smooth containers (bowls) with steep walls on the inside and, if necessary, provided with additional attractants (e.g. honey or sugar), in which the ants drown.
  • Poisoning : Insecticides are applied in the form of granules, gel, spray or in special bait cans near the ant trail or the nest. Since the workers in an ant colony carry the active ingredient of the bait into the nest as food, the whole colony is affected. Fipronil , permethrin and spinosad are used as poisons . Household substances that are toxic to ants, such as baking powder or coffee grounds, are considered household remedies . The sodium hydrogen carbonate in baking soda works by changing the pH in the animals' bodies. Around two millimeters in size, pharaoh ants, which were introduced into Europe from the tropical regions in the mid-19th century, are ineffective because they prefer fresh, protein-rich food.
  • Relocation : When an ant colony is relocated, a vessel filled with nest building material is placed on or next to the nest. As soon as the people are resettled in the vessel, it is moved to another location.
  • Construction of barriers : A sealing of the affected facility z. B. by insulating materials and grouting prevents insects from entering.
