American Dialect Society
The American Dialect Society (ADS) is a North American learned society . It was founded in 1889 and has set itself the task of researching the English spoken in the USA and Canada as well as its influences on other languages and the influences from other languages in North America. The ADS also works on the Dictionary of American Regional English and the Linguistic Atlas of the United States and Canada. Since 1990 it has chosen a word of the year .
