The Australomedusidae are a family of the Hydrozoa (Hydrozoa). It is a small group of probably only six or seven species in three or four genera, whose occurrence is restricted to the Pacific.
features
The sessile hydroid polyps are stolonal, i. H. Runners grow from the base of the primary polyp, which can grow into a (secondary) polyp again elsewhere. The body of the hydroid polyps (hydranth) is naked, i. H. without a periderm cover or the like. A single row of filiform tentacles sits roughly in the middle of the body. The mouth has simple lips. The medusa is quite small, often only a few millimeters in diameter. There are four, exceptionally eight, simple radial channels. The medusa has a total of 50–500 tentacles. The perradial tentacles are arranged in four groups, with four interradial groups of tentacles, which can also be reduced to rudimentary pistons. The gonads are attached to the manubrium, or to the manubrium and the proximal portions of the radial canals. Ocelli can be present or absent. There are 60–100 statocysts at the edge of the umbrella. The budding takes place a little below the tentacle rim.
Geographical occurrence
The two species of Australomedusa are found in saline coastal lakes of Australia. Octorathkea occurs off Japan, Zhangiella off the east coast of China.
