The American Line was the largest US shipping company of its time. The Philadelphia-based company operated liner services on the transatlantic route between North America and Europe and existed from 1872 to 1925.

history

The company was founded in Philadelphia in 1872 as the American Steamship Company . The shipping company began initially with charter ships, passenger and freight services to Queenstown and Liverpool . These liner services operated under the name American Line from the start . As early as 1884, the number of passengers and freight on the transatlantic route to Philadelphia had decreased so much that the International Navigation Company, also from Philadelphia, took over the American Line. JP Morgan acquired the parent company in 1900 and renamed it International Mercantile Marine Company in 1904 . Under their umbrella, the American Line was operated together with shipping companies such as Red Star Line , White Star Line , Dominion Line , Atlantic Transport Line or the Leyland Line . All American Line services were suspended by 1925.

  • 1893: From New York to Southampton (from 1899 via Cherbourg, from 1904 additionally via Plymouth)
  • 1902 to 1925: Individual voyages from US east coast ports to Europe
  • 1914: From New York to Southampton (during the war, alternatively New York to Liverpool)
  • 1920: From New York via Plymouth and Cherbourg to Southampton (temporarily Hamburg instead of Southampton)
