Atlantic Transport Line

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Atlantic Transport Line ( ATL ) was an American shipping company that existed from 1883 to 1936 and was headquartered in Baltimore . The ships were registered in Great Britain . The company operated a successful liner service on the North Atlantic between North America and Europe .

history

In 1883 the American Bernard Baker founded the Atlantic Transport Line based in Baltimore to maintain a freighter service to London . In order to better survive in this business, the ships were registered in Great Britain . But the shareholders all came from the USA . The ships were easily recognized by a red chimney with white ribbon below the dark blue cap and the ship's name began at the beginning with the letter S on, and later with M .

The route traveled initially ran from Baltimore to London, from 1890 New York became the general port of departure in North America, and Belfast or Swansea could also be called on the way to London . The ships were mostly cargo ships with little or no passenger capacity; It was not until 1900 that the shipping company used passenger ships with a very large cargo capacity. In 1896 the National Line was bought by the ATL and operated until 1914.

In 1900 the shipping company was bought by the banker JP Morgan and joined his IMMC shipping trust. Not much changed for the ATL, but more money was available and more new buildings were commissioned. Until the beginning of the First World War , in 1914, the company was one of the most important freighter lines on the transatlantic route. During the war, the shipping company lost many of its ships, and in 1915 the IMMC went bankrupt and came under US government trusteeship.

After the war, the ATL faced constant financial problems. Not much remained of the former size, and there was not enough money for extensive new buildings. Until the Great Depression , the shipping company came through more badly than well. In 1931 the passenger service ceased and in 1936 the Atlantic Transport Line ceased to exist.
