American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP), German: American Society for Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama , was founded in New York in 1942 and is now based in Princeton .

The founding president was the psychodramatist Jakob L. Moreno . At the time of their founding, the ASGPP and Moreno were in direct competition with the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) and its founder Samuel Slavson . The AGPA insisted on a strictly analytical tradition, while the ASGPP integrated dynamic and theatrical elements into its formal canon. The ASGPP holds annual conventions and meetings, sets educational standards and ethical guidelines, networks group therapists across the United States and internationally, and informs the public about group therapy, psychodrama and sociometry and their providers.

Every year the company presents numerous well-known awards, including the

  • Zerka T. Moreno Award for outstanding achievements by psychodramatists and group therapists who did not belong to the ASGPP
  • Neil Passariello Memorial Workshop as an invitation from a speaker who has done a lot for people with HIV and AIDS.
