Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography

The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography , shortly ASLO , is an international trade company which is the science of Limnology and Oceanography is devoted. It publishes various scientific journals and holds a conference at least once a year. The ASLO was founded in 1948 as the American Society for Limnology and Oceanography and was renamed in 2011.

history

The society was formed in 1948 from the merger of the Limnological Society of America and the Oceanographic Society of the Pacific . In 2011 it got its current name. By renaming the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography , the international membership structure (at that time approx. 25% non-US members) was to be emphasized more strongly while the established acronym ASLO was retained.

Today the society has around 4,000 members from around 60 countries, making it the largest society devoted to limnology or oceanography or both areas at the same time. Its objective is to convey knowledge about aquatic ecosystems, i.e. inland waters and seas , in an international context , to integrate findings and to promote the exchange of information. For this purpose, the ASLO holds a conference on a variety of current topics up to twice a year. The conferences mostly take place in the United States, and occasionally in Europe.

The ASLO Business Office is based in Waco (Texas, USA).

Publications

ASLO publishes the following scientific journals:

  • Limnology and Oceanography , a respected scientific journal with original articles, commentary, and review articles on limnology and oceanography. 6 issues per year, plus special issues. Articles that are more than three years old can generally be downloaded free of charge from the Internet.
  • Limnology and Oceanography: Methods , a continuously appearing online-only publication with short method-oriented articles.
  • Limnology and Oceanography: Letters , a purely online publication for short articles ( letters ), articles on current topics ( current evidence ) and essays in the field of limnology or oceanography.
  • Limnology and Oceanography Bulletin , a quarterly newsletter with a maximum of three larger scientific articles.
  • The journal Limnology and Oceanography: Fluids and Environments was published from 2011 to 2014 and then discontinued. It was a continuously appearing purely online publication with articles that combine hydrodynamics and water-bound transport processes with biological, chemical and geological processes in aquatic systems.

Prices

The ASLO also awards prizes for outstanding scientific achievements:

  • Raymond L. Lindeman Award (since 1987) for an outstanding publication by a young scientist
  • G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award (since 1982) for recognition of excellence in limnology or oceanography
  • AC Redfield Lifetime Achievement Award (since 1994) for long-term services in the areas of limnology or oceanography or for professional society
  • John Martin Award (since 2005) for a publication in the aquatic sciences, which had a great influence on research in the relevant field
  • Ruth Patrick Award (since 1999) in recognition of research on the application of basic aquatic research to identify, analyze and / or solve important environmental problems
  • Ramón Margalef Award (since 2008) for excellent teaching.
  • Yentsch-Schindler Early Career Award (since 2012) for young scientists no later than 12 years after their last university degree.
  • Victoria J. Bertics Memorial Award (since 1987) for academics unable to continue their careers due to early death or disability.
  • Tommy and Yvette Edmondson Distinguished Service Award (since 1993) for exceptional service in support of ASLO.
