American line-up

Symphony orchestra: The "American" orchestra line-up that is customary internationally today

A certain seating arrangement of a symphony orchestra is described as an American arrangement . The most important difference between the American setup and the German setup is the arrangement of the violins : In the American setup, the second violins sit next to the first violins, the other string sections follow from left to right.

The American line-up has established itself in many orchestras around the world. The German constellation is still popular, however, especially for works in historical performance practice . The Madison Symphony Orchestra has recently switched to the German line-up.
