history

Immediately after the end of World War II , on October 1, 1945, the institution with the full name of L'Amicale des déportés politiques de la Résistance de Mauthausen et de ses kommandos dépendants was founded as a prisoners' association . The founding members were mainly the survivors of the Mauthausen concentration camp and its subcamps (the subcamps were sometimes also called subcamps).

tasks

Investigations by the Amicale de Mauthausen revealed that 198,000 people of 25 nationalities had been deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp, including almost 10,000 French. 118,000 died in the inhumane working conditions in Mauthausen concentration camp or were murdered in a gas chamber installed in the camp . Especially in the post-war years, but still today, the Amicale helps the families of the "disappeared" (missing) or their children.

The Amicale has now been commemorating the crimes of National Socialism for 60 years . It occurs primarily at various international events, such as commemorative ceremonies to commemorate the liberation of Mauthausen. Various trips to Mauthausen are also organized.

structure

In 2000, a generation change took place almost officially. Due to their age, the survivors of the camp handed over their functions in the Amicale to their children. Nevertheless, around 500 deportees and their families still work in the association to remember their suffering.

The French Amicale is a member of the Comité International de Mauthausen and has 1,700 members. Its headquarters are in Paris , but there are also numerous members in many departments.

Austrian memorial service

At their headquarters in Paris, instead of the military service required in many countries, Austrians can do the Austrian memorial service.

On September 1, 2008, the first Austrian memorial servant began his service in Paris .
