The Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Déportation ( Foundation to commemorate the deportation ) was founded on October 17, 1990 on the initiative of the then French Prime Minister Michel Rocard and the then Interior Minister . The seat of the foundation is Paris .

structure

It acts as a supporting organization for a number of associations and societies that deal with deportation and internment under National Socialism and the Vichy regime between 1940 and 1945 in France.

As a state institution, the decision-making authority rests with an 18-member advisory board , which is made up of representatives from the French interior, defense, education, economy, culture and finance ministries and is, to a certain extent, state patronage . The patron is the respective French President. The head of the foundation is Yves Lescure.

tasks

The work of the foundation and the associations and societies that can be attributed to it concentrates on supporting actions, associations and initiatives of former internees and their families and on maintaining or completing and expanding knowledge about internment and deportation for future generations. In its program, the organization refers to the following principles, which together form the basis for successful documentation and research work that has been going on for over 10 years:

  • pérenniser (perpetuate): to keep the memory of the deportation of countless people and their lives alive.
  • défendre (to defend): To protect the honor and interests of former concentration camp prisoners.
  • s'opposer (to resist): To stand up against any violation of freedom, dignity and rights of people suffering from totalitarian systems.
  • contribuer: Activity for the maintenance of all documentation material in order to prevent a return of National Socialism.
  • participer (to participate): To make a contribution to the education of the following generations in order to equip them with respect and knowledge about the terrible historical events.
  • approfondir (deepen): The international reputation of the organization, to deepen knowledge about concentration camp imprisonment and resistance in World War II through the information and documents available from the Fondation.
  • continuer: To continue the scientific work in order to find out more about the pathology of National Socialism.

By imparting knowledge and educational work for broad sections of the population, the Fondation tries on the one hand to preserve the memory of internment and deportation, but on the other hand to make a preventive contribution so that deportation and internment never happen again.
