Ammi-saduqa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ammi-ṣaduqa ( Ammisaduqa, Ammi-zaduqa, Ammizaduqa ) was from 1646 to 1626 BC. BC ( middle chronology ) Babylonian king.

Life

Ammi-ṣaduqa was the successor of Ammī-ditāna . Under his rule, other areas of Babylon probably fell away. Written sources are lacking, as the annual formulas that assign events to the years of reign of a ruler only record buildings or the like at this time. Campaigns are not recorded. Clay tablets from Terqa, however, prove the rule of Ammi-ṣaduqa.

Decrees from the reign of Ammi-ṣaduqa concern the debts of the common people. A mešarum edict, probably from the first year of Ammi-ṣaduqa's reign, stipulates penalties for fraudulent creditors (payment of six times the debt, otherwise the death penalty) and violent tax collectors (death penalty) and regulates the tax system.

The oldest known version of the Atraḫasis epic ( Gilgamesh epic ) comes from the reign of Ammi-ṣaduqa .

Venus observations

Venus transit on June 8, 2004.

The Venus tablets of Ammi-ṣaduqa are the oldest written document on planetary observation to date . The cuneiform texts discovered in the library of Aššurbanipal in Nineveh contain in particular observations of Venus and its synodic 584-day period .

If the middle chronology is correct for Ammi-ṣaduqa, then in his 5th year of reign on May 6th, Greg. ( 3rd Ajaru ) 1642 BC The rare Venus transit took place. In Babylonia the beginning could be observed from 5:26 p.m. until shortly before sunset (6:37 p.m.). The maximum was reached around 9:02 p.m. local time; the Venus transit ended around 12:32 a.m. on May 7th (4th Ajaru).
