Amphipathic helix
An amphipathic helix is an α-helix whose hydrophobic and polar amino acid side chains are on opposite sides, so that a lipophilic and a hydrophilic surface can develop. Amphipathic helices occur, for example, as anchoring of membrane proteins , where part of a protein is often located in the lipid membrane and part in the aqueous cytosol . They also represent an important part of the activation domain of many transcription factors , and thus enable contact between the corresponding transcription factors and other elements of transcription .
