Term of office

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term of office or term of office describes the period of time in which an elected or assigned office is filled by a person. After the term of office has expired, the office is to be filled or replaced. The term of office can be traced back to the Roman law institute of the annuity . Limiting the duration of high government office was introduced as part of the consolidation of power . With the fall of the Roman Republic, the terms of office also disappeared. The posts were given for an indefinite period on the emperor's grace and were only terminated by the death or instructions of the ruler. Only with the establishment of democratic traditions through the French Revolution did the term of office become a defining image of parliamentarism in the course of democratization . The limitation of the term of office is therefore an expression of the principle of democracy .
