Ana Lilia Pérez Mendoza (* 1976 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican journalist and author .

Ana Lilia Pérez studied history and journalism. She worked as a reporter for renowned Mexican daily newspapers such as Milenio , La Jornada , El Financiero , Excélsior , Novedades and the German Süddeutsche Zeitung .

In 2011 she published her first book about the Mexican state oil company Pemex and their involvement with the cartels ("El Cartel Negro"). The book caused quite a stir in Mexico . Pérez came into conflict with the cartels. She went into hiding and went into exile in Germany in 2012. When PEN and the Hamburg Foundation for the Politically Persecuted she found support. Ana Lilia Pérez now lives in Mexico again (as of 2016).

In 2016 her book “Kokainmeere. The ways of global drug trafficking ”, a translation of her book Mares de cocaína in Germany. Pérez conducted investigative research into the Mexican mafia and how state authorities, politicians and large parts of the economy have been infiltrated. It makes it clear that the drug trade makes the everyday life of the poor in Mexico worse.

Awards

Ana Lilia Pérez has received several awards for her work.

She was awarded the Premio Nacional de Periodismo , the most important Mexican journalism award. In 2012 she was honored with the prize for the freedom and future of the media . It is awarded by the Sparkasse Leipzig Media Foundation to journalists, publishers and media institutions who are committed to freedom of the press and is endowed with 30,000 euros.
