When anal cancer , and anal cancer called, refers to malignant tumors in the area of the anus . Depending on the anatomical position, a distinction is made between an anal canal carcinoma and an anal margin carcinoma . This distinction is of great importance for the treatment of cancer .

Anal canal cancer

One speaks of an anal canal carcinoma when the tumor lies between the dentate line (upper, in the oral direction, border) and the anocutaneous line . About 80% of all anal carcinomas are anal canal carcinomas and 20% are anal margin carcinomas.

Anal rim cancer

Carcinoma of the anal margin occurs in the case of malignant tumors that are located below (distal) the anocutaneous line and 5 cm around it. Anal rim tumors are treated like skin tumors and have an overall more favorable prognosis than anal canal carcinomas.
