Ananda Chandra
Ananda Chandra ( Anandacandra ) was king in Arakan , the current Rakhine state in Burma , in the 8th century . He is known for his lavish buildings, which should promote Buddhism , but he also prayed to Hindu deities .
Ananda Chandra added the inscription from Shit-Thaung , which traces its 18 predecessors back to the god Shiva . Its capital was the large city of Vesali , which was surrounded by a city wall and a moat. The added inscriptions deal with the king's temple foundations and donations from land, slaves and draft animals. As king, he watched over the law and enacted numerous cases.
The Arakan Empire was strategically important as it could dominate trade in the Bay of Bengal for a period of time . Many Buddhist monks found a home here or traveled to Southeast Asia .
