Anastassios Karatassos

Anastassios Karatassos (* 1766 in Dovras ( Macedonia ); † January 21, 1830 in Nafpaktos ) was Armatol of South Macedonia from 1790–1821 and one of the heroes of the Greek struggles for freedom from 1821–1829.

Karatassos took part in the preparations for the war of liberation and appeared openly against the Ottoman rule in the spring of 1822. As a military leader he fought against Turkish superiority in the fortified Naousa , one of his sons was killed and his wife and three children fell into slavery.

His son, Dimitrios Karatasos (* 1798 in Dichalevri), commanded the rebels in Macedonia in 1841 and 1854 , then was King Otto's first adjutant, governor of Argolis from 1856 . He died in Belgrade in 1861 on a tour in preparation for a general uprising against the Turks.
