Andaw Ordination Hall

The Andaw Ordination Hall ( Burmese အံ တော် သိမ် ဘုရား ; pronounced: àɴdɔ̀ θèiɴ pʰəjá) is a Buddhist ordination hall in Mrauk U , Myanmar .

history

It was built from 1515 to 1521 under King Sajata , restored under King Min Palaung between 1534 and 1542 and expanded in 1596 under King Min Raza Gri to include a tooth relic of the Buddha from Ceylon.

description

The ordination hall is in the vicinity of the Ratanabon Pagoda and the Shite Thaung Temple . It is surrounded by sixteen small Buddha shrines on the northwest and southwest corners and is crowned by a central stupa in the middle and eight smaller stupas on the eight corners of the hall. Inside, two concentric walkways run around the likewise octagonal cella. The outer of the two passageways has 32 niches with Buddha statues, five of which probably date from the Mon empire in the 12th century.
