Ander Garitano Urquizu (born February 26, 1969 in Derio ) is a Spanish football coach and former player .

Career

Born in Basque, Garitano played for several years as a left offensive player for the traditional Basque club Athletic Bilbao in his career as a professional footballer . From 1996 to 2002 he played for six years for Bilbao's league rivals Real Saragossa until the end of his career. With Saragossa he won the Copa del Rey , the Spanish Cup in 2001 .

Since then he has coached several Aragonese youth teams until he took over the position of his predecessor Víctor Fernández on January 14, 2008 . He made his debut at the Copa del Rey - round of 16 second leg at Racing Santander , which they lost 2: 4 and were eliminated from the first leg after the 1: 1. On January 22, he resigned from his coaching position due to differences with the club's management and with playmaker Andrés D'Alessandro .
