Andrei Wladimirowitsch Tolstoy ( Russian Андре́й Владими́рович Толсто́й ; * December 27, 1956 in Moscow ; † February 11, 2016 there ) was a Russian art historian .

Life

Tolstoy came from the branched Russian noble family Tolstoy . In 1979 he graduated in art history from Lomonosov University in Moscow ; In 2002 he received his doctorate. In 2003 he was appointed professor at the Moscow Architecture Institute and in 2009 professor at the Moscow Art Institute Surikov (Московский государственный академический художественный институт имен.Иву Свет Имен. He also taught at the Moscow Institute for European Cultural Studies (IEK) (Институт европейских культур).

Tolstoy was director of the Research Institute for Theory and History of Fine Arts, an institution of the Russian Academy of Arts. He was a member of the Russian Academy of Arts and a board member of the academy.

Tolstoy was an expert on 20th century Russian painting and the art of Russian emigrants. He was committed to the communication of Russian and foreign artists and published several books.
