Andrew Chesterman
Andrew Chesterman is an English - Finnish linguist and translation scholar .
Life
Chesterman first began studying French and German at Cambridge University . After completing his BA , he decided to go to Savonlinna , Finland , to teach English there. About a year later he started translating from Finnish into English at the University of Helsinki and also gave his first seminars in it. In 1971 Chesterman went to Edinburgh with his Finnish wife and did his Master of Letters in Applied Linguistics . His PhD thesis on Finnish grammar was published by Cambridge University Press .
Chesterman published the book Readings in Translation Theory in 1989 , in which he collected and introduced translation theoretical texts by 16 authors. Some of the texts were published there for the first time in English, including a text by Hans Josef Vermeer on his scopo theory in a translation by Chesterman.
After he became increasingly concerned with translation theory and participated in several conferences of various European universities, he was elected to the board of the European Society for Translation Studies .
His theoretical and scientific work culminated in 1997 with the publication of his work Memes of Translation , which also encompassed other disciplines such as ethics and biology . The question of the theory behind the translation process and how it can facilitate or improve the work of translators has been increasingly investigated by Chesterman. He therefore dealt more and more with the theory of science , especially with Karl Popper's criticism of the theories.
Chesterman has been retired since 2013. He announced that he would deal with the translation of Finnish literary classics into English.
