Android Open Kang Project ( AOKP for short ) is an alternative open source custom ROM for smartphones and tablet computers based on the mobile operating system Android .

history

AOKP was started in 2011 as free and open source software by Roman Birg based on the official versions of the Android Open Source Project and quickly gained popularity, forming a small developer community called AOKP Team or Team Kang. AOKP was long considered "number 2" behind Cyanogenmod until Paranoid Android overtook the project. In April 2013 the ROM reached 1 million downloads, by September 2013 the number of users had increased to 3.5 million users.

Surname

The name is a combination of the word Kang (slang for stolen code) and AOSP (Android Open Source Project). The name was originally a joke but it stayed.
