Androscoggin Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Androscoggin Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ). It existed as an independent company from 1848 to 1911.

history

The company was founded on August 10, 1848 and built a railway line from Brunswick to Farmington and a 7.7 kilometer branch line to Lewiston . The network was completed in 1861. The Leeds Junction – Farmington section was initially built with a gauge of 1676 millimeters, but was switched to standard gauge in 1861 .

The planned extension from Lewiston to Mechanic Falls (about 16 kilometers) was not built because the Androscoggin Railroad was increasingly in financial difficulties. In 1865, the Leeds Junction – Farmington section was outsourced as Leeds and Farmington Railroad by foreclosure, but could be leased from December 1, 1865. The Androscoggin Railroad continued to operate on this route anyway.

On June 29, 1871 the company was leased from the Maine Central Railroad and finally bought on August 19, 1911. Today only the Brunswick – Lewiston Lower route and the Leeds Junction – Livermore Falls section are operated by Pan Am Railways .
