Angel is an underground station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Islington . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1, below a major intersection at the eastern end of Pentonville Road. Trains of the Northern Line stop here . In 2011, 17.78 million passengers used the station.

history

The opening of the station took place on November 17, 1901 by the City and South London Railway (today the city branch of the Northern Line). This was the northern terminus until May 12, 1907, when the line was extended to King's Cross and Euston main stations .

Like most of the other stations on this route, Angel was built with a central platform; a design that today only exists at the Clapham North and Clapham Common stations . Access was by elevators . In order to increase the capacity, the tunnel profile had to be extended. For this reason, the station was closed from August 8, 1922 to April 20, 1924.

More and more it became apparent that the central platform no longer met the requirements. It posed a security risk and turned out to be a bottleneck. For this reason, the station was almost completely rebuilt at the beginning of the 1990s. A new platform was created for the northbound trains. The platform for trains going south was closed from August 9 to October 19, 1992. During this time the second track was removed there. This is also the reason why this platform is unusually wide compared to others.

The elevators and the station building on the corner of Torrens Street and City Road were closed, and a new building was built on Upper Street. Because this is some distance from the platforms, it was necessary to build two escalators that are arranged at a right angle. One of these escalators is the longest in Western Europe; it is 60 meters long and overcomes a height difference of 27.4 meters.
