Angel ( Japanese 天使 , Tenshi , Eng. "Angel") is a manga by Erika Sakurazawa . The work has about 220 pages, has been translated into several languages ​​and can be assigned to the genres Josei , Drama and Romanticism .

An angel girl can only be seen by a few people whose lives she changes for the better. One day, the lonely employee Kato meets the angel in a bar in Tokyo . When the angel kisses him, wings also grow on his head for a short time. After he often gives the angel a gimlet to drink, the angel finally stays with Kato for some time and lives with him in his apartment. The mute, mostly smiling angel, however, often runs away to help other people in difficult phases of life and to give them a new will to live, such as the depressed 14-year-old Mizuho and the little girl Chi, who is neglected by her mother Katsumi, an alcoholic becomes.

Publications

The manga appeared in Japan from 1997 to 1999 at irregular intervals in the manga magazine Feel Young , for which Sakurazawa is a regular artist. The publishing house Shōdensha brought out the individual chapters previously published in the magazine in December 1999 as an anthology. In 2006 a second volume was published by the same publisher.

The first volume was published in South Korea, in English by Tokyopop and in French by Kana . A German version was published by Tokyopop in February 2005 ( ISBN 3-86580-222-2 ). The translation was done by Dorothea Überall.

reception

The echo of the critics was divided, although the characters were often praised. Jason Thompson expressed himself in his book Manga. The Complete Guide about critical; he was "moderate even by Sakurazawa's standards" , the character sketches were "interesting, but [...] they lack a direction or a solution."

Sabine Rudert, on the other hand, praised Sakurazawa's “mercilessly honest” stories in AnimaniA , which, compared to the earlier work Between the Sheets, are “more mature, the dialogues more interesting and the portrayal of the characters more soulful” . Despite the angel as a fantastic element, the story is entirely believable.

Sequels

The angel is also the leitmotif in three other works by Sakurazawa that can be seen as sequels to Angel : in Angel Nest ( 天使 の 巣 , Tenshi no Su ), which appeared in 2001, in Angel Town ( 天使 の 棲 む 街 , Tenshi no Sumu Machi ) from 2005 and in Tenshi II ( 天使 II ) from 2006. The first two were published in German by Tokyopop.

filming

On January 14, 2006, the live action film Tenshi , based on the manga, was released in Japanese cinemas.
