Angelo La Barbera (born July 3, 1924 in Palermo , † July 1975 in Perugia ) was a high-ranking member of the Sicilian mafia . Together with his brother Salvatore La Barbera , he led the influential mafia clan Palermo Centro .

Life

The Italian Angelo La Barbera began his career in the Palermo Mafia family with minor thefts. He worked himself u. a. through murders quickly up the hierarchy and finally took over the organization of the Palermo Centro clan together with his brother . The La Barbera brothers created one of the richest mafia clans and controlled much of the urban building program in Palermo. 1960 started La Barbera with the smuggling of heroin from Mexico to Canada and the United States. Carlo Gambino , head of the Gambino family , which is influential in the USA , prohibited Angelo La Barbera from doing this and threatened to kill him if he continued.

Angelo La Barbera was a key player in the First Great Mafia War of the Cosa Nostra . One of the reasons behind the Mafia War was that the up-and-coming La Barberas wanted to prove that they could do without American help. In a major trial against the Mafia, Angelo La Barbera, whose influence had steadily declined by then, was sentenced to 22 years in prison, against which he appealed. La Barbera spent the time deciding on his appeal in various detention centers in northern Italy. In July 1975, he was stabbed to death in Perugia prison by three mafiosi who were also arrested.
