Angelo Maria Ripellino

Angelo Maria Ripellino (born December 4, 1923 in Palermo , † April 21, 1978 in Rome ) was an Italian Slavist, poet, translator and author.

Life

Ripellino lived in Rome since childhood. He studied Slavic Studies and dealt with Polish, Russian and Czech literature. He was a professor of Slavic studies in Rome. In 1947 he married the Czech Romance writer Elisa Hlochová (Ela Ripellino), who helped him translate poetry from Czech into Italian. Ripellino often visited Prague . Due to his protest against the invasion of Russian troops in Prague in August 1968, he was forbidden to return to Prague.

Works

From the Czech he translated works by: Halas, Holan, Hora, Kolář, Orten, Seifert, Wolker and Zahradníček. His work Praga magica (Magical Prague) from 1973 has been translated into five other languages, such as English , French and German .
