Angus Robertson (2001)

Angus Struan Carolus Robertson (born September 28, 1969 in Wimbledon, London ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP). From October 2016 to February 2018 he was deputy SNP party chairman.

biography

Angus Robertson was born in the London borough of Wimbledon to a father from Scotland and a German mother. The father was an engineer working in London, the mother a nurse from Berlin. He grew up in Edinburgh , where he attended Broughton High School . He then studied at the University of Aberdeen Politics and International Relations ( Politics and International Relations ). He completed his studies with an MA . Robertson became politically active at the age of 15 when he joined the youth organization of the SNP. At that time there was resistance to Margaret Thatcher's policies .

After graduating, Robertson worked as a journalist and correspondent, including for the BBC and ORF . During this time he lived in Austria for 10 years. In 1999 he returned to Scotland where he ran unsuccessfully for the SNP in the general election in Scotland in 1999 . In the 2001 general election , he was nominated as an SNP candidate in the Moray constituency, elected with 30.3% and won the constituency in the subsequent general election in 2005 (36.6%), 2010 (39.7%) and 2015 (49.5 %) %) win again. Robertson led the SNP's election campaigns ahead of the Scottish general elections in 2007 and 2011, and in 2014 the SNP's campaign for the independence referendum in Scotland .

After Alex Salmond was elected First Minister in Scotland in 2007, Robertson succeeded him as the SNP parliamentary group leader in Westminster Parliament.

Even after Alex Salmond moved back to Westminster from Scotland after the 2015 election, Robertson continued to be group leader of the SNP. In September 2015, Robertson became a member of the Privy Council .

Politically, Roberton represents the well-known positions of the SNP, in particular the support for Scotland's independence, but rejects the characterization as a “Scottish nationalist”. Like many Scots, he has a regional and at the same time a European identity.

On October 13, 2016, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the SNP to succeed Stewart Hosie, who resigned as a result of a private affair . With a loss of votes, Robertson was defeated by the conservative Douglas Ross in the early general election in 2017 and subsequently left the House of Commons.

Personal

Robertson speaks fluent German and is therefore often used by the German-speaking media as a contact person for Scottish questions. He is married to Carron Anderson who works in his House of Representatives in Westminster. In a letter to the German ZAW in 2009, Robertson complained that the Scots in Germany were often associated with greed (Mäc Geiz, Mc Paper, Mc Fit etc., typically always with advertising in tartan outfits). These disparaging attributions, repeated over and over again, would rewarm old, long outdated prejudices and bordered on racism.
