The Principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau was a German territory that existed from 1544 and 1553 and again from 1611 to 1665. The rulers of the country were the princes of Anhalt-Plötzkau from the house of the Askanians .

The Principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau was first established in 1544 after the division of Anhalt-Dessau . After the death of George III. , the godly , the land fell back to Anhalt-Dessau.

In 1603 there was an inheritance agreement between the brothers of the Anhalt Princely House. The Principality of Anhalt, united under Prince Joachim Ernst of Anhalt-Dessau , was divided up among his sons, initially (1606) into the four principalities of Anhalt-Dessau , Anhalt-Bernburg , Anhalt-Köthen and Anhalt-Zerbst .

In 1611, Prince August, the fifth brother, who had previously renounced his own principality and opted for financial compensation, was given his own domain by spinning off the Plötzkau rule from the principality of Anhalt-Bernburg, but under the sovereignty of Anhalt-Bernburg.

In 1623 the Principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau received its own “ army ”, consisting of feudal riders and 20 recruited soldiers , through the Anhalt State Defense Works agreed between the brothers in 1620 . The Anhalt feudal riding was responsible for securing the roads and fords / passages in the neighboring territories. Rittmeister / captain of the (overall) Anhalt feudal riding was Wilhelm von Proeck in 1623 .

In 1665 the Anhalt-Köthen line died out. According to the succession agreement of 1603, the Anhalt-Plötzkau line inherited the first vacant throne and took over the principality of Anhalt-Köthen. The Principality of Anhalt-Plötzkau fell back to Anhalt-Bernburg and was added to the Principality of Anhalt-Bernburg-Harzgerode on the basis of inheritance and exchange of territory.
