Their physique resembles that of the other representatives of this genus with the roundish one with the big eyes, the strong hind legs and the long tail. Their fur is gray-brown on the upper side and darkens towards the tail, the tip of the tail is black. A dark eel line runs along the back . The color of the top of the head and shoulders is more brownish, the underside is gray. The ears are smaller than those of other weasel lemurs.

distribution and habitat

Ankarana weasel lemurs inhabit northern Madagascar, their range includes the Montagne d'Ambre, Ankarana and Analamerana regions. There they occur in both dry and moist forests and are common up to an altitude of 1500 meters. The river Irodo forms the northern limit of its range, the small area north of it is inhabited by the northern weasel lemur , with which the Ankarana weasel lemur was previously grouped.

Way of life

Ankarana lemurs, like all weasel lemurs, are nocturnal, during the day they sleep in thickets or in tree hollows. In the night they go in search of food, climbing and jumping vertically. They inhabit areas of around one hectare in size, and interactions between adult animals can hardly be observed. Their diet consists primarily of leaves.

Danger

Due to human settlement activity and mining, its area of distribution has been greatly reduced and fragmented and today only covers around 5000  km² . Another threat to the Ankarana lemurs, the hunting is for their meat. The IUCN lists the species as "critically endangered" ( endangered ).
