The Anna Salai in Chennai

The Anna Salai ( Tamil : அண்ணா சாலை [ ˈaɳːɑː ˈsɑːlɛi̯ ] "Anna Street"), formerly English. Mount Road , is the main street of Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The former Mount Road was renamed Anna Salai in 1971 after the politician CN Annadurai (called Anna) .

The Anna Salai begins at Fort St. George at the mouth of the Cooum and leads from there to the southwest towards St. Thomas Mount in southern Chennai (hence the old name Mount Road ). It ends at the Kathipara Junction , where it splits into Mount-Poonamallee Road leading towards the western suburb of Poonamallee and the Grand Southern Trunk Road (National Highway 45), which continues to the southwest . The Anna Salai is 12.6 kilometers long and has six lanes. A 1800 meter long section of road, the Anna Flyover, is built as an elevated road. In order to cope with the increasing traffic jams, the construction of new overpasses is planned. The blue line of the Chennai Metro, which is currently under construction, runs underground along the Anna Salai.

The Anna Salai is the main business center of Chennai. The street is lined with office buildings like the 14-story LIC Building , shopping malls like the famous Spencer Plaza , other shops like Higginbotham’s , India ’s oldest bookseller, and five-star hotels. The Anna Salai also houses the new parliament building for the state of Tamil Nadu, the Anglican St. George's Cathedral and the Thousand Lights Mosque .
