The Chennai Metro ( English : Chennai Metro , Tamil : சென்னை மெட்ரோ ) is a subway in Chennai , the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It opened on June 29, 2015. It has two lines with a total length of 45.1 kilometers.

history

Construction of the elevated railway line at Arumbakkam (July 2011)

Like many major Indian cities, Chennai has seen rapid population growth and significant increases in traffic. The number of motor vehicles registered in Chennai tripled between 2001 and 2011. The result is increasing traffic and environmental problems. For this reason, the construction of a subway modeled on the Delhi Metro was proposed back in 2003 . In June 2006, the government of the state of Tamil Nadu requested a draft project from the operators of the Delhi Metro, which was submitted on November 1, 2007 and approved by the cabinet on November 7, 2007. The engineer E. Sreedharan , who had already managed the construction of the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro, was in charge of the planning . In January 2009, the Indian central government approved the plans. Construction work began in June 2009. Construction of the tunnel sections began in January 2012.

On June 29, 2015, the elevated railway line of the Green Line between Koyambedu and Alandur was opened as the first section of the Chennai Metro . On September 21, 2016, the elevated section of the Blue Line followed between Little Mount and Chennai Airport . On October 14, 2016, the Green Line was extended from Alandur to St. Thomas Mount . The section of the Green Line between Thirumangalam and Nehru Park went into operation as the first tunnel section on May 14, 2017 . On May 25, 2018, the Green Line was completed with the opening of the section from Nehru Park via Egmore to Chennai Central . At the same time, the first tunnel section of the Blue Line between Saidapet and AG-DMS was opened. With the opening of the remaining section of the Blue Line from AG-DMS to Washermanpet, the first expansion phase was completed on February 10, 2019.

In August 2017, construction work began on the northern extension of the Blue Line.

Route network

Since the completion of the first expansion phase, the Chennai Metro has comprised a 45.1-kilometer route network with two lines (24.0 kilometers in the tunnel and 21.1 kilometers as elevated ) and 32 stations (19 in the tunnel and 13 above ground). The Blue Line begins in Washermanpet in northern Chennai and heads southwest to Chennai Airport . The Green Line starts at Chennai Central Station and heads west before turning south, crossing the Blue Line again in Alandur and finally ending at St. Thomas Mount Station.

In the medium term, a northern extension of the Blue Line from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar is planned. It will cover a distance of nine kilometers (seven kilometers of which as an elevated railway and two kilometers in the tunnel) with eight stations (six of them above ground and two in the tunnel).

line route opening length Stations
Blue line (Washermanpet - Chennai Central -) AG-DMS - Alandur - Chennai Airport 2016 23.1 km 17th
Green line Chennai Central - Nehru Park - Alandur - St. Thomas Mount 2015 22.0 km 17th

Further planning

After completion of the first expansion phase, an extensive second expansion phase is planned. This should include three more lines with a total length of 107 kilometers and 116 stations. 80 percent of the routes should run in the tunnel. A line is to run from the northern suburb of Madhavaram to Siruseri in the south of Chennai and, among other things, open up the so-called “IT corridor” along Old Mahabalipuram Road . Another line is also to begin in Madhavaram and run through the western suburbs of Chennai to Sholinganallur . The third new line is to lead from the existing CMBT station to the Lighthouse station on Marina Beach and thus create a cross connection in an east-west direction.

There are also considerations that the existing MRTS elevated railway could be taken over by the Chennai Metro. The MRTS, which opened in 1995, is currently operated with normal local trains.
