Madhavaram
Madhavaram ( Tamil : மாதவரம் Mātavaram [ ˈmaːd̪əʋarʌm ], also Madavaram, Mathavaram ) is a district of Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Madhavaram forms one of 15 zones ( zones ) Chennais and includes twelve Neighborhood ( wards ).
Madhavaram is located in the northwest of Chennai, around eleven kilometers from the city center. The Madhavaram Zone covers an area of 33.5 square kilometers. In the west, the zone borders on Lake Puzhal , a water reservoir that secures Chennai's drinking water supply; within Madhavaram there is also the smaller Lake Retteri . Due to the expansion of Chennai and the construction of new housing developments for the urban middle class, Madhavaram is now heavily urbanized, but some parts of the zone are still rural. Madhavaram is traditionally known for its mango growing and dairy farming . National Highway 5 , the main Chennais artery, and the bypass that connects National Highway 5 with National Highways 205 and 4 run through Madhavaram .
Until 2011 Madhavaram was an independent municipality ( municipality ) with an area of 17.4 square kilometers and 118,525 inhabitants (2011 census). The city was the capital of the Taluk Madhavaram in the Tiruvallur district . The population development of Madhavaram was rapidly increasing: Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 54.3 percent. But the place had long since grown together with Chennai and became part of the Chennai agglomeration . Through the city expansion of Chennai, Madhavaram was also incorporated administratively into Chennai. The former municipality of Madhavaram, together with the also incorporated cities of Chinnasekkadu and Puzhal and the municipalities of Kathirvedu , Surappattu and Puthagaram, form the Madhavaram zone.
