Adyar ( Tamil : அடையாறு Aṭaiyāṟu [ ˈaɖɛi̯jaːr (ɯ) ]; also Adayar , Adaiyar ) is a district of Chennai (Madras) in the state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the south of Chennai on the south side of the Adyar River . Adyar forms one of 15 zones ( zones ) of Chennai and comprises 13 Neighborhood ( wards ).

The actual Adyar district covers only part of the zone of the same name. Its borders are not clearly defined, but the district can be clearly demarcated from Besant Nagar in the east, Thiruvanmiyur in the south, Guindy in the west and Mylapore in the north. the border with Guindy is formed by the Buckingham Canal , that to Mylapore by the Adyar River. In addition to Adyar in the narrower sense, the Adyar zone also includes Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Guindy and other areas such as Velachery or Saidapet .

Adyar became known early on through the Theosophical Society (later Adyar-TG ), which moved its headquarters here in 1882 and founded theosophical lodges and centers around the world. The headquarters of the Theosophical Society is located in the middle of a 109 hectare garden on the banks of the Adyar River.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, many apartments were built in Adyar, creating entire residential areas. There has been a university since 1959 and numerous companies from the IT industry settled here in the late 1990s . The world's largest leather research institute, the Central Leather Research Institute, is also based in Adaiyar.

Theosophical Society Adyar

The Theosophical Society Adyar is a theosophical organization that developed from the Theosophical Society (TG) founded in New York City in 1875 . The headquarters are in Adyar. Today it is by far the largest TG and is active in more than 60 countries around the world, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In addition to its classic range of effects in the area of esotericism and religion , it exerted great influence on society, politics, art and science in the course of its history. Radha Burnier , born in Adyar, was President of the Theosophical Society Adyar.
